Camp Season Salary: $1900 plus room and board.
Under the direction of the Program Director, the Program Assistant Trips & Transportation is responsible for transportation of camp staff and girls ages 5-17 for an assigned group of campers. This position performs transportation needs on opening and closing days and assisting unit staff in the planning of out of camp area trips, coordinates with the kitchen staff, and substitutes as a unit counselor to provide staff breaks. This position is also accountable for the general safety and empowering the personal growth and skill development of the participants in their group. The Program Assistant Trips and Transportation exhibits enthusiasm and patience while exemplifying the Girl Scout core values of honesty, caring, courage, and character.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:
- Assists in providing ten days of staff training prior to the arrival of campers, focusing primarily on instructing staff on how to prepare their campers and their group in general for a variety of tripping opportunities. This instruction will include scheduling, outdoor skills, care and use of provided equipment, shelters, filing trip plans, camper supervision, transportation of people and gear and trip locations
- Prepares staff for a nearby overnight trip during staff training that takes the group through all the steps of preparing for, attending and returning from a trip with campers. Leads the trip and ensures that all staff have the trip skills necessary for their job, such as building fire, using camp stoves, setting up shelters, etc
- Manages luggage of campers and staff on opening and closing days of each session
- Manages transportation of campers on closing day; communicates with Unit Leaders regarding how each camper will be going home (camp vans or personal pick up), including instructions for placing luggage for each camper for maximum efficiency. Transports campers on closing days to assigned location
- Attends to safety of campers at all times; follows and instructs staff on procedures for incidents and emergencies that may occur on trips
- Works to create a positive group culture through team-building and problem-solving activities
- Assists unit staff in scheduling and carrying out weekly age-appropriate trip programming requirements
- Instructs Unit Staff on how to teach and encourage campers to progress in independent and group living skills such as caring for equipment, proper use of supplies and equipment, clean up and following safety guidelines
- Engages all campers in games, crafts, or other activities at all times (including during the girls’ down time, meals, all-camp activities, clean-up, etc.)
- Attends all meals with campers in the dining hall or during cook-outs. Teaches and models table manners, appropriate meal conversation and positive social interactions
- Instructs unit staff how to provide opportunities for girls to lead during all arts/crafts/nature activities
- Models personal responsibilities such as conflict management, positive relationships, following rules, and respecting camp property
- Follows and implements appropriate behavior management procedures when interacting with all campers
- Completes and submits all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner
- Exhibits punctuality and communication in time management, including daily and weekly breaks
- Respects and follows the “Camp is for the camper” philosophy by attending to camper and camp needs first.
- Represents camp appropriately in the community and with parents by maintaining personal hygiene, following camp dress code, and communicating respectfully with campers, parents and other adults.
- Actively participates in staff trainings, meetings, and camp closing activities, including but not limited to deep cleaning, lifting or moving equipment, taking out trash and closing inventory
- Reports concerns and incidents to Assistant Camp Director-Program
- Practices the Girl Scout Promise and Law with an inclusive attitude and a willingness to problem-solve
- Attends weekly scheduling meetings with Unit Leaders
- Follows all procedures and regulations according to the GSEWNI Council, GSUSA, and state and federal guidelines and laws and the American Camp Association

- Must be 21 years or older
- Current First Aid & CPR certification
- Valid Driver’s License and insurability required
- One (1) year experience working with girls ages 5-17 through camp, day care, or teaching.
- Ability to grasp the landscape within an organization, show passion for working with Girl Scouts and the nonprofit environment and expertise in using various communication vehicles that engage girls, volunteers, parents, donors and the community
- Willingness to subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout movement, including acceptance of the Girl Scout philosophy and willingness to maintain membership in the Girl Scouts USA
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:
Regularly lift objects up 30 pounds, repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Climb, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist and crouch while performing custodial duties. Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time, up to 12 hours, and work in inclement weather. Clearly see 20+ feet, with or without corrective lenses and differentiate between colors (no color blindness)
